Real Time Scheduling at Gibbs Gears
September 2005

Hertfordshire based Gibbs Gears Precision Engineers Ltd, has a complete gear shop capable of manufacturing all types of gears, splines and rollers . The company uses CNC machines for both turning and gear cutting and also specialize in reverse engineering. Operating under a complete quality control system, with a focus on lean and JIT methods Gibbs Gears were looking to invest in a system to replace their existing manual Gantt chart, a labour intensive process that restricted their planning to approximately only two months in advance.

The company receives over 200 works orders a month, the majority of which are new, so one-offs or batch production is common. With 74 work centres this level of flow and batch production requires close management. The real-time Scheduler from Seiki Systems interfaced to the existing ERP manages all the processes involved, enabling Gibbs Gears to improve performance, reduce lead times and maximise capacity at every stage of production. Reece Garrod Managing Director of Gibbs Gears explains, "after searching for six months to find a system powerful enough to be capable of managing the large amount of multi tasking we require, Seiki Systems were the only ones who came up with a system that could handle the variable work load and one which could be tailored to our needs." Customer service is a main priority at Gibbs Gears, and being able to work using real time resource capacity, and immediately showing the consequence a change in the schedule has on every other order, will enable them to accurately predict completion dates of jobs. Gibbs Gears can then confidently predict adherence to delivery dates, all of which generates a high level of customer satisfaction.

In the mean time, with the support of Seiki Systems engineers, they continue to configure the system to their specific requirements ensuring that the system is working to it's full potential for them, enabling Gibbs Gears to gain the maximum benefit from their investment.

Surge in sales demonstrates improved productivity by customers
July 2005

Manufacturing software specialist Seiki Systems of Brighton is reaping the benefits of its strong application-led portfolio of software packages covering scheduling, DNC and machine monitoring products (products page) drawing a massive 80 per cent increase in sales between October and March 2005.

Says recently appointed Chief Executive David Moody: "In addition to winning new customers, much of the increase in sales has been generated through existing customers reaping benefits from Seiki Systems' installations which have been used to help justify and fund further expansion."

The expansions to existing systems have increased the number of machines or production units being monitored giving wider management control and appreciation of what is happening in real time situations on the shopfloor. Meanwhile, due to the success of existing Seiki Systems' installations, customers have been taking advantage of installing other software systems form the modular packages available which include DNC, CNC program control, NMS machine monitoring, iMES production scheduling software and Overalll Equipment Effectiveness Software (OEE).

As David Moody predicts: "Such is the competitive edge required by the manufacturing sector in the UK that knowing exactly what is happening in 'real time' to expensive machine tools has never been more critical. Here, customers using Seiki Systems' software are dramatically increasing productivity and in particular machine utilisation that in turn, becomes a self-funding improvement strategy."

David Moody brings with him a wealth of experience in the IT industry. He was heavily involved in the supercomputer revolution of the late 80s and early 90s, having worked for both Intel and USDATA Corporation. David has been involved in information systems including the independent distribution of software within Europe and has gained unrivalled knowledge and experience in management and manufacturing systems applied to baggage handling, breweries, water systems, lighting, tunnels and transport systems.

He was attracted by new market opportunities whilst maintaining our core business in the engineering and metal cutting industries. In his first few weeks David visited a number of customer sites and has been impressed by our customers' extensive utilisation of our products and the substantial savings they report. He hopes to visit many more sites in the coming months in order to better understand customer requirements for the future development of Seiki Systems products and to further improve levels of productivity and utilisation of their people, services and equipment.

Integrated Manufacturing Seminar
23rd February 2005

Finally, after months of hard work, on the 23 rd February 2005 the combined efforts of Seiki Systems and three other leading suppliers of manufacturing software bore fruition with the debut of the their revolutionary Integrated Manufacturing Seminar. Combining the specialist expertise of four separate software suppliers; Seiki Systems, FactoryMaster, PTC and CGTech, Wednesday's seminar designed to educate and inform about the limitless possibilities of integrated manufacturing, was undeniably a roaring success.

Staged at Shepshed's 600 Centre and with an audience made up of representatives from all areas of the manufacturing spectrum, the seminar's ambitious format differentiated it from other such events from the outset. Depicting the streamlined virtual production operation of a single part throughout the entire manufacturing process, from quotation through to scheduling, tooling, production data, process management, delivery and invoicing, to name just a few of the processes highlighted by the seminar as benefiting from an integrated manufacturing system. Central to the seminar's demonstration was the four companies' united belief that if you want to stay competitive, reduce lead times and improve manufacturing and commercial control the best way to so it is by getting integrated. They argue that when a business operates around multiple separated islands of information and databases created for each department, this leads to fragmentation of the business that inevitably results in error and delay.

Integrated Manufacturing Seminar
23rd February 2005

On the 23rd February 2005 Seiki Systems is set to co-host a seminar focusing on the benefits of integrated manufacturing. Bringing together four market leaders in their own respective fields and at the forefront of technological development; Seiki Systems, PTC, FactoryMaster and CG Tech, the seminar is aimed directly at companies who recognise the need for improved manufacturing and commercial control and lean thinking.

Each of these these companies is dedicated to showing the manufacturer the potentially mind-blowing benefits of integrated manufacturing, a claim that will be clearly supported in a seminar that following one single part throughout the whole manufacturing process, demonstrates at each turn how integrated manufacturing leads to both improved manufacturing and commercial control, time and cost efficiency and lean practices.
